What is Thought Field Therapy (TFT)?

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) Tapping is a unique therapeutic process that uses the body's energy meridian system* to access and resolve the root cause and essence of an emotional problem.

How was TFT discovered?

TFT was discovered in 1980 by Dr Roger Callahan PhD, one of America's most experienced and distinguished Clinical Psychologists. Dr Callahan was dissatisfied with conventional techniques which he found to be time consuming and largely ineffective. He became interested in an alternative therapy called Applied Kinesiology (AK) which addresses the body's energy meridian system and realised that some of its techniques could have an application in the treatment of negative emotions.

The first patient treated with what we now know as TFT was a middle-aged lady called Mary, who had a severe phobia of water.

Dr Callahan had treated Mary for 18 months without much success using conventional methods. One day, with little or nothing left to offer, he experimented with his newly found technique. He knew Mary had described her fear as being felt in the stomach, and he also knew that the stomach meridian began under her eyes. So he simply tried finger tapping under Mary's eyes. Her phobia promptly vanished and has stayed away to this day.

Dr Callahan spent years of research and experimentation to improve the effectiveness of the therapy. The end-product was what we now know as Callahan Techniques ® Thought Field Therapy, or TFT for short.

How does it work?

Put simply, Roger Callahan PhD discovered that our body's energy meridian system controls negative emotions and can therefore be used to heal them too.

Dr Callahan discovered that negative emotions like fear, anxiety, guilt, grief and so on, cause an imbalance in the body's internal energy flow. And that whenever we think of something we are tuning in a specific 'thought field' in much the same way as a TV must be tuned to receive a specific channel.

The concept of a thought field is the distinguishing characteristic of TFT. Held within that field are the coded information patterns used by the body and mind to generate the entire emotional experience associated with that thought.

When the relevant thought field of a problem is attuned it brings to the fore the specific imbalance in the body's energy system together with the relevant information that is active or encoded in that problem, and which is responsible for generating negative emotions.

By tapping carefully chosen points along the meridians in a specific sequence, (like a computer operator might type a delete instruction on a keyboard) a treatment code is applied that effectively 'switches off' the emotional experience.

The person can now think about the problem, should they wish to, as the memory of it remains unaffected, but the associated negative emotions will no longer be present.

Removing the imbalance allows energy to flow more freely through the body.

* Centuries ago, Chinese scientist-philosophers observed that vital life energy, or Qi, flowed through the body along a specific network of channels. These channels or meridians connect all organs and systems in the body.

After a number of years of feeling in low spirits with little energy, I had a session of TFT. It made me realise how many negative issues I was carrying round inside me. These issues were addressed and released and since then I have felt very positive and energised. I have got my life back.
